Eve Kuzneski and Maggie Cunningham, members of the class of 2025, organized an outstanding non-partisan voter drive and voter education effort at IHS during the spring semester. They registered a remarkable 90% of the eligible members of the class of 2025.
Their efforts earned IHS and the Indiana Area School District the prestigious Governor’s Gold Award for Civic Engagement for the third consecutive year. This places IHS and the Indiana Area School District in an elite group of just 19 schools throughout the Commonwealth to receive the Gold Award out of the 1,400+ high schools in Pennsylvania. In addition, Indiana Area Senior High School is one of only nine schools to earn this distinction in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 calendar years.
The girls worked hard and represented their school and community with the civic ideals that we all value as Americans. We are proud of the efforts of our young people who are fulfilling their roles as citizens, leaders, and community members, and we know that they will make a significant impact on our community, state, and country in the years to come!
As everyone knows, the right to vote is one of our most fundamental civic responsibilities, and it is a right that Kuzneski, Cunningham, and the students at IHS take seriously. Kuzneski and Cunningham discussed with their classmates the importance of voting, reviewed the voting process with them, and helped them register to vote. When students needed additional information, Kuzneski and Cunningham walked them through the process and answered their questions. This personal approach created an environment in which students felt comfortable and supported.
"The IHS Social Studies Department wants to wholeheartedly thank the students in the class of 2025 for fulfilling their civic responsibility and taking their role as citizens in our democracy to heart," said Matt Neil, a social studies teacher.
The Indiana Area School District is grateful for the work of all its social studies educators in planting and nurturing the seeds of citizenship.
