Indiana Area teacher named Indiana County Teacher of the Year

The Indiana County Chamber of Commerce and its community partners celebrated outstanding teachers, students, and educational achievements at the 3rd Annual Indiana County Excellence in Education Awards. The event took place at IUP’s Ed Fry Arena on Monday, April 28, 2025.

Michael Dolges of the Indiana Area School District (IASD) was named Indiana County’s Teacher of the Year. This recognition highlights his exceptional leadership, dedication, and innovation in STEM education. In recognition of his efforts and work as a teacher, Mr. Dolges received a new car, generously awarded by Colonial Motor Mart.

As the founders of the Southwest Combat Bots League, Mr. Dolges and Mr. Scott Herrington (IASD Teacher of the Year in 2024) have grown the program from a single-school initiative to a multi-district competition involving ten school districts in just three years. Their vision has provided students with hands-on experience in scientific and engineering design, planning, development, building, and competition. Through this program, students develop STEM skills, teamwork, problem-solving, collaboration, and competitive abilities.

Mr. Dolges has also fostered strong partnerships with industry leaders, creating opportunities for students interested in engineering, man99ufacturing, and scientific fields. He actively participates in the "What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?" initiative, exposing students to regional manufacturing opportunities and career pathways in STEM. His mentorship in this program demonstrates his dedication to developing future leaders and innovators.

Additionally, Mr. Dolges serves as a teacher mentor for the Chief Science Officer program, an international initiative empowering student voices in STEM leadership. He cultivates young leaders by fostering engagement and collaboration in the field, ensuring they are equipped with technical skills and prepared for leadership roles in their academic and professional journeys.

Mr. Dolges exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional educator and leader. His commitment to advancing STEM education, fostering student leadership, and driving innovation makes him a valuable asset to the Indiana Area School District and beyond.

Generous scholarships from the United Way of Indiana County were awarded to numerous students, including two from the IASD.  IASD’s own Max Julian received a$1,000 scholarship in recognition of his philanthropic award, and Elizabeth Kinneer, the Indiana Area School District’s Student of the Year finalist, was granted a $500 scholarship.

The Indiana Area School District is grateful to the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce for creating an opportunity to celebrate excellence in education, as well as to the United Way of Indiana County and Colonial Motors for their generous support of students and teachers.
