IASD board member makes history

When Quintina Thomas was appointed to the Indiana Area School District Board of School Directors in December, she made history. She became the first African American to serve in that role.

Originally from Philadelphia, Quintina has been a resident of Indiana for over almost 20 years. She moved to the area as a student at IUP and ultimately decided to make Indiana her home. She has dedicated her career to meeting the social needs of the community in various ways by establishing small businesses and non-profit organizations. As a former child therapist, Quintina has a heart for vulnerable populations and understands the importance of advocacy. She transitioned into the educational field because of the lack of educators available for today’s society.

Quintina holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Child, Development, and Family Relations, a Mental Health Certification in Family Structural Therapy, and a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Teacher’s Education and Equity in Administration. She specializes in adult education and workforce development, organizational development, and diversity initiatives. She decided to run for school board as a way to serve the community in a meaningful way and ensure the district maintains quality education for all. Quintina  is also a wife and mother of three children in the district. She deeply cares about the well-being of all our youth and wants them to be successful in every aspect.

In honor of Black History Month, the Indiana Area School District celebrates this milestone and people like Quintina who are making a positive difference.
