Here at the Senior High we have a Senior Career Seminar Internship Program.
Some basic information about the program:
This is for Seniors only and they must fill out an application and go through an interview process in order to be considered for the program. They will start this process their Junior Year during scheduling.
The student will be responsible for providing transportation and any materials necessary to do the internship (uniform etc)
The student should have a professional connection established- who will they be doing the internship with?
The student and the parent are responsible for reading and signing the "Policy Manual" for the internship program.
There is a time requirement for this program. Guidance will validate if student schedule permits for this opportunity.
Students will be supervised by a mentor at the internship site and a mentor at the Senior High.
The student will also have meetings to which they must report back to at the Senior High. These will take place 2-3 times per month over the course of the school year.
The student is evaluated and graded by both the internship site mentor and building mentor.
Building supervisors will make site visits to observe the student.
The student is also responsible for an end of year portfolio and any other assignments given by the building mentor.
The purpose of this program is to give students an opportunity to spend time learning about a career they are interested in and gain real world experience.
The internship may take place within the district or off school grounds.
CLEARANCES MUST BE OBTAINED by the mentor if the student is doing the internship off school grounds. The clearances are to be filed with the MAIN OFFICE at the SENIOR HIGH prior to the student starting the internship.
"I currently do an internship at IRMC hospital, and I can say that it has been one of the most amazing and educational experiences of my life. I have learned so much that I can carry with me throughout my life and hope to utilize in my future career. I have the opportunity to shadow a variety of doctors who specialize in many different fields. This opportunity has allowed me to strengthen my communication skills, to have empathy, and to further educate myself more than any class could. If any upcoming senior has the opportunity to do an internship, I highly recommend it." - K.C.
"I had the privelege of being a part of the Elementary Internship Program. I spent my day at East Pike and worked with ten different teachers. I helped teachers organize their rooms, prepare for various activities, grade assignments, and teach guided reading lessons. The internship gave me such an advantage in my academic career as an education major at IUP. I could relate to theories and techniques so much better. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be an intern and see what is involved with being a teacher." - B.B.
"I gained 540 hours of classroom experience with my internship at the Junior High in the Music Department. I worked with entire classes, gave individual lessons, and the general organization of band. I liked helping kids understand musical concepts and giving them a better appreciation for music. I was also able to interact with Life Skills students. Now that I am in college, I am very excited to complete my courses and get back in the classroom as a teacher." - A.V.
"Through the Senior Career Seminar I have learned and been able to experience many things. I was given the opportunity to communicate with professionals in the technology field and learn useful skills from these people. In my opinion the internship that I chose was very valuable to me and my future. It gave me a perspective of what types of istuations I may be faced with someday in the workforce. I learned how to get projects done on a deadline with other group members, how to deal with unforseen situations that may arise due to technology malfunctions, and how to communicate clearly and effectively with others. All of these skills will benefit me in the future and without Senior Career Seminar I wouldnt have been able to experience those things. My advice to anyone thinking about doing internship through the Senior Career Seminar program is to do it. The knowledge and experience you gain puts you ahead when it comes to finding and maintaining a job." - L.T.
