Required Courses

Required English classes are taught at four achievement levels, as follows:

LEVEL

GRADE 10 GRADE 11 GRADE 12

DESCRIPTION

BASIC / PILOT 001 009 013

This level concentrates on skill discovery.  It is designed for the student who needs to progress at a slow pace with reinforcement through repetition.  Focus will be on remediation of basic skills in both reading and writing.  Placement by teacher recommendation only.

GENERAL 002 010 014

This level concentrates on skill development.  It is designed for the student who has average reading, writing, and speaking skills but continues to require structured practice.  Emphasis is on developing skills needed for success in post-secondary technical schools or employment.

HIGH 003 011 015

This level concentrates on skill refinement.  It is designed for the motivated student with good reading and writing skills.  Students should be able to think critically and work independently with teacher supervision.

ACCELERATED 004 012 016

This level concentrates on skill synthesis.  It is designed for the highly motivated student who has excellent reading, writing, and speaking skills.  Students in this level will be independent learners who enjoy self-motivated learning activities.  Summer reading may be required at the discretion of the instructor.

 

Course Descriptions

English 10

American Literature.  Students in this course will explore American literature from the colonial era to the present.  In addition to studying the works of American authors, students will recognize the influences of philosophies such as Puritanism, Rationalism, Romanticism, and Realism in the literature.  Attention will also be paid to the development of writing skills, with particular emphasis on thesis development and various composition styles.  The necessity for clear communication of oral ideas is also stressed.  A research project promoting analytical thinking, independent learning, and perceptive reasoning is also included.

 

English 11

World Literature.  Students in this course will explore the development of literature from the ancient world to the present.  Selections will be taken from various cultures including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.  Students will write and speak about how their reading relates to literary elements, world cultures, and their own personal views.  A personal reading anthology is incorporated into the curriculum.  Additionally, students complete a unit dealing with the selection of career training options.  Students will be encouraged to work independently and in small groups, fostering personal life-long learning practices.  N.B.  The final grade for English 11 may be withheld pending satisfactory completion of the Culminating Project.

 

English 12

British Literature.  Students in this course will complete a survey of the literature of Britain from the Medieval era to the contemporary period.  Units are approached chronologically and students are encouraged to explore various styles of writing based on the selections read.  Additionally, students will exercise research skills and make connections with career options.  Students will have opportunities to self-select materials for independent and / or small group projects.
