HME Gallery Featured Artist
The Horace Mann Gallery is located in a neighborhood elementary school within the Indiana Area School District. The gallery was an idea conceived by Dr. James Antis, past principal and, later, assistant superintendent, who enlisted the enthusiastic support of Horace Mann Art Teacher, Mrs. Molly Weber; artist and teacher assistant, Mrs. Gemma Boyer; and Junior High School Art Teacher, Mrs. Arlene Miller to transform an unattractive, common area into an inspirational teaching environment. The gallery was created in an effort to expose the children of Horace Mann Elementary School to the world of art beyond the art classroom. In addition, it was hoped to provide an outreach to the community for local aspiring and professional artists to exhibit their work. The idea was intended not only to create an attractive environment but also to be used by building teachers as a source of inspiration and motivation to encourage creative expression by their students for learning activities. It was also envisioned that the gallery would become a true art gallery where artists could exhibit and sell their work to promote their talents and encourage the development of talent within the children who passed through the gallery each day.
Horace Mann Gallery has been in existence since 1996. Within that time, the children of Horace Mann Elementary School, the faculty and the community have been fortunate to have been exposed to both local and international artists. Guest artists are asked to conduct a one-day artist-in-residence experience for the faculty and students during the time of their exhibit. These experiences have enabled the children to directly interact with the exhibiting artist. This special sharing experience allows an opportunity for the artist to discuss his or her chosen media, give demonstrations and encourage the creative process.
Gallery openings have become a well attended cultural event in the community. The gallery has become an arts related asset in making connections for local artists and also in helping to establish a partnership with other community arts organizations. We believe Horace Mann Gallery to be a tremendous "grass roots" success story that has furnished experiences benefiting children, adults and members of the community at large.
The current principal, Ms. Denise Dragich, has provided ongoing support and encouragement for the continued growth and success of the gallery efforts. Horace Mann Gallery has become an invaluable asset to the school and community and another key to opening the door into the creative minds of our students and teachers. As we continue to grow, we thank everyone who has contributed to its success and ask for continued support in providing children an open door to their creative abilities for the future.
