Tips for Parents
To help your child learn to read unknown words try this technique:
DRILL SANDWICH TECHNIQUE
1. Write 7 known words on index cards.
2. Write one unknown word on 3 index cards.
3. Make a "Drill Sandwich" and practice it until your
child can read the unknown word on three different
occasions.
DRILL SANDWICH: KKK-U-KK-U-KK-U
K = known word
U = unknown word
4. When mastery is reached, the unknown word is moved into a known position and a new unknown is added.
Try this technique to help your child learn basic sight words, reading vocabulary words, and spelling words.
