Things you already learned....
Your first year chemistry course has prepared you in a number of ways for continued study in chemistry. Hopefully you remember a significant amount of the material from that course as AP Chemistry builds significantly upon that foundation. Here are some topics that we will spend little class time reviewing, but you are expected to know: This basically amounts to the first eight chapters of our textbook: Chemistry the Central Science.
* Basic Chemical Nomenclature including memorizing important polyatomic ions.
* Significant Digit Rules and Basic Calculation Skills.
* Fundamental Mole Calculations involving molar mass including basic stoichiometry.
* Basic chemical equation writing: balancing, predicting products for simple reactions.
* Simple thermodynamic calculations: specific heat and "heat of reaction".
* Basic atomic theory: atomic notation, isotopes, electron configuration of small atoms.
* Organization of the Periodic Table
* Basic Bonding Theories: Covalent and Ionic Bonding, Lewis Diagrams, BasicVSEPR
The first day of school will begin with a lab to review limiting reactants. Click here to download the handout. Complete the pre-lab from the first experiment for the first day of school. There will be a significant review assignment given on day one using problems from the first few chapters of the textbook covering the first four bullets above. Here are some excellent resources to help you review this material. You'll also find helpful resources for all AP topics at Mr. Palko's Test Review Resources Page. Also, read the safety guidelines and print the sign-off sheet. Bring this sheet with you on the first day.
* Mr. Nelson's Moodle Site (log in as a guest)
* Mr. Palko's Basic Help Page (under construction)
