 British Literature

British Literature is a full year senior course that meets five days a week, forty minutes a day, and is worth one credit.  British Literature is designed as a survey course from the Anglo-Saxon Era through the Twentieth Century.   Units of study correspond to Holt, Rinehart, and Winston's Elements of Literature--Sixth course, 1997, ed.  The literature is studied from a historical and cultural perspective.  The course uses a variety of genres including the epic, poetry, drama, novel, and short story.  In addition to the study of literature, the student will also study the development of the English language from Old English to Modern English.

Writing assignments and vocabulary study is generated from the literary selections.  Student writing is related to the literature through analysis of the historical, social, and political background fro the major periods in British Literature; however, writing assignments also include reflective, personal writing as well.

During the senior year, students are expected to complete their Graduation Portfolio.  In early October students will write the Graduation Reflective Paper.  Students will receive a variety of prompts that can serve as essays for college applications as well as the essay for the Graduation Portfolio.  In late April or early May, students will change the student profile from their junior year to a student resume.  They will need three references for the resume.  These references can be current or former employers, neighbors, coaches, teachers, or other people with whom the student has worked closely.  Students will need to gain the person's permission to use the person's name, address, and phone number on the student's resume.  Keep in mind that students cannot graduate without completing all parts of the Graduation Portfolio (grades 9-12).
