Students who have a first language other than English are assessed in order to establish if English as a Second Language class is appropriate. ESL offers support to students to build vocabulary, develop reading strategies, build fluency in reading and speaking, and develop listening skills. In addition, English language learners, or ELLs, employ English language spelling patterns, grammar skills, and the writing process. A student’s country of origin, native language, and previous experience with English are considered when choosing materials and assignments.
Students earn credits toward graduation. Students are graded on participation, class work, homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. The four learning domains of reading, writing, listening and speaking are the foundation for all activities and assignments.
